Mayan Terminology

Gregorian Calendar – Our current civil calendar, instated in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII of Rome. It was installed to replace the failing Julian calendar, wherein the pope after September 5 then called the next day to be September 15th, and proceeded to add on months to the calendar. It is a calendar of 12 months, of varying sizes, from a 28-day month to a 31-day month, depending upon the month.

Flicker Factor.  It was explained as the sensate condition of how the brain works based on frequency of events seen by the eye. Critical flicker frequency (CFF) is the transition point of an intermittent light source where the flickering light ceases and appears as a continuous light.

World Tree - is the organizing principle of the universe, as in the four directions or up/down, left and right. Many cultural cosmologies employ this analogy including the Christian bible with the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden.

The Maya believed in an "Underworld", a causal realm of pure energy/ consciousness, the realm of the gods. From this realm arises the material world we perceive with our senses.

****

The Nine Underworlds are nine levels of evolution of consiousness.

  • every Underworld is 20 times shorter than the one it is built upon (the previous level)
  • each Underworld is developed by 13 Heavens, Oxlahun-ti-ku, divided into 7 periods of light and 6 periods of dark

The Thirteen Heavens are ruled by thirteen dieties

  • if we look at every other deity, the seven with odd-numbers above, we find that they are forces that nurture the development of a seed. Thus, a seed that is planted during the rule of the god of procreation (First Heaven) receives some light through the god of sunrise (Third Heaven) and water by the gods of watering and rain (Fifth and Seventh Heavens) and some further light by the god of fire (Ninth Heaven) until it turns into a flower (Eleventh Heaven) and finally matures as a fruit under the rule of the Thirteenth Heaven.

Trecenas are thirteen-day periods in the Tzolkin. Each Trecena starts with the Number 1, but with a different Day Glyph. As a wave of the Thirteen Heavens, the underlying energy is governed by the First Day Glyph of the Trecena and influences all thirteen successive Day Glyphs. Being aware of the predominant energy of the First Day of the Trecena, we can align our intentions with that energy and allow our goals to manifest.

Another representation of the Trecena is that of a creative wave beginning at 1 and ending at 13, with the numbers 6, 7 and 8 representing the crest of the wave. The crest could be interpreted as a strong influential energy, although the underlying influence on the Trecena would still rest in the beginning.
