Reality TV
Several years ago when reality TV programs first became popular I just couldn’t understand what all the excitement was about. They seemed, well, silly, but nevertheless, people seemed to be enthralled ….yes, enthralled …. by them. So I took a moment to inquire inside as to what this strange phenomena was mirroring to us – showing us about ourselves. I recall receiving the answer in a flash of insight as I stood one afternoon on a street corner waiting for a pedestrian light – and it made such perfect sense.
The popularity of reality TV programs reflects our awakening consciousness, our desire to know ourselves. We are beginning to become SELF-conscious.
It seems we can’t get enough of looking intimately “into” the lives of people who are “just like us”. The anesthesia is beginning to wear off; the hypnotic induction is beginning to fade as we shift from living vicariously through the lives and roles of movie stars and sports heroes to our growing fascination with each other and what makes us tick. We’re “getting real” as we shift from the worshipping of idols and their place in the big picture to examining the lives and roles of each other, and who and how and why and where each of us fit into it.
It seems natural and inevitable that when we finally get bored with asking the question “Who are you?” we will begin to ask the question “Who am I?” – the burning question in the heart and soul of all Seekers on the path of Enlightment. This time, however, I don’t believe we will be afforded the luxury of time to get bored with the current question. I think that as the full ramifications of Earth’s evolution, and the resultant climate change impacts us personally and society as a whole, we may on mass and overnight be compelled to ask “WHO AM I?” and “WHAT AM I DOING HERE?”
I have no prediction for how our current “reality show” will evolve because I believe it will evolve differently for each and every one of us depending on our perspective, and our ability and willingness to change and adapt. All I know is that some of us are busy collaborating on this season’s grand finale and brainstorming our script for next season, while others go about their days with eyes wide shut.
